Chef Austin Yancey took an interest in cooking at an early age, spending many hours in his grandmother’s “southern style” kitchen. That Greenville, South Carolina home was where young Austin was first introduced to the concept of farm to table cooking, and his lifelong passion for food was born. After briefly attending the University of South Carolina, he moved to Chicago to pursue a career in culinary arts, enrolling at Le Cordon Bleu. Yancey took every opportunity outside of his normal classes to learn and experience more within the professional culinary world. In 2005, he had the chance to compete in the selection process for the Bocuse d’Or USA competition as an assistant to Chef Rick Gresh. The chef would become Yancey’s coach and mentor, training him in competitive cooking as well as in the nuances of the restaurant industry. Yancey’s experience with the Bocuse d’Or fueled his drive and determination to succeed in the culinary field. Setting his sights on fine dining in early 2008, Yancey landed a job at Alinea, a Michelin 3-Star restaurant, working under Chef Grant Achatz. His time there would prove to be invaluable as he quickly learned the hard work and dedication that it takes to succeed in one of the world’s top kitchens. Now back at Le Cordon Bleu as a Culinary Instructor, Chef Yancey organized, and currently mentors, the school’s competitive cooking team. Under his instruction the team has earned numerous medals in culinary events and has become one of the most popular extracurricular clubs at Le Cordon Bleu – Chicago. In August of 2011, Chef Yancey founded Elite Personal Chefs, LLC, a Personal Chef, Diet Consulting, and Private Cooking Class company, while continuing his work as a culinary educator and mentor for students at Le Cordon Bleu. In 2012, he received the Olson Communications “Chefs of Tomorrow Grant” and finished first in the 2012 “What’s in your Wok?” National cooking competition sponsored by Riviana Foods, makers of Minute® Rice and other national brands. Currently under the tutelage and training of Certified Master Chef and World Global Master Chef Edward Leonard, Chef Yancey trains tirelessly to accomplish his goal of earning the title of Certified Master Chef. As part of his training, Chef Austin was invited to compete in the 2013 World Dubai Hospitality Championships where he earned a Gold Medal with Team USA. Yancey holds an Associate’s Degree in Applied Science in Culinary Arts as well as a Bachelors Degree in Culinary Management; both from Le Cordon Bleu. He also holds the designation of Certified Executive Chef, Personal Certified Executive Chef as well as Certified Culinary Educator through the American Culinary Federation. Recently, Chef Yancey was named “2012 Educator of the Year in Academic Leadership” for Career Education Corporation, one of the organizations highest honors............................................................................................ ............................................................................................................ In February 2014, Chef Yancey, was named the American Culinary Federation (ACF) Windy City Chapter "Chef of the Year." This award is presented to chefs who represent their respective ACF chapter with a high caliber of skill, expertise, and mentorship. By virtue of this achievement, Chef Yancey eligible to compete at the ACF Central Regional Conference in 2015 as Regional Chef of the Year. Along with educating his students, Chef Yancey continues to pursue competitive cooking opportunities and further ACF certification.
